The Sedona method is an amazingly quick way to let go of negative emotions, and allow the positive, happy you which is always there below the surface, to emerge and shine.

Have you noticed how easily a baby moves from one emotion to another? One minute the baby is crying because she is too hot. The next minute, after her blanket is removed, she is beaming smiles. She let her feeling of anger at being too hot float away like a cloud.

As we grow up we lose this natural facility of letting go of emotions once they have served their purpose. We may start to replay them constantly, or we may stuff them down because they are too uncomfortable to deal with. Either way we tie up lots of energy up in perpetuating old emotions.

Imagine how much better you’ll feel as you quickly let go of fear, anger, sadness, apathy, resentment or any other emotion that feels uncomfortable.

How to release your feelings
1.  Move from head to heart

Since you’ll be dealing with your feelings it makes sense to be working from the feeling area of your heart.  Allow your attention to drop from your head to your heart area. You may find it helpful to direct a few breaths to your heart area to help make this transition.

2.  Identify the feeling

Choose an issue that’s bothering you, and ask yourself:

As I consider <this issue>, what feeling is present right now?

Eg: As I consider <tomorrow’s presentation>, what feeling is present?

Answer: I feel afraid – fear.

TIP Avoid any temptation to go back into your head and start thinking… “I’m afraid I’ll dry up, and they’ll think I’m stupid, and then…”. The beauty of Sedona releasing is that you don’t need to get tied up with the complications of thoughts, you simply work with the feelings. As you release the feelings the thoughts fall away too.

TIP If it’s difficult to name the feeling, that’s OK, simply use a phrase like ‘this uncomfortable feeling’.

3.  Welcome the feeling

The next step is to welcome the feeling as best you can. Ask yourself:

Could I welcome this feeling?

In a gentle way, allow the feeling to be as fully present as possible.

Notice what it feels like. For example you might feel anger as tension in your chest, or sadness as tightness in your throat. Or you may have more of an energetic sensation of constriction. Or you may not sense anything – that’s fine.

Sometimes the feeling releases after this step along!

TIP If it feels too scary to welcome the feeling fully, simply allow yourself to be in touch with the feeling as much as you can right now. If this is just the edge of, say, a strong anger, that’s fine.

4.  Ask yourself three questions

Now you’re ready to ask yourself the three questions at the heart of the Sedona Method.

  • For all the questions, answer from your heart. This means trusting yourself to go with your ‘gut response ’.
  • For the first two questions, answer with a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
  1. Could I let this <fear> go?
  2. Would I let it go?
  3. When?

TIP If your answer to questions 1. or 2. is a ‘No’, that’s fine. You may have released the feeling anyway; if not you can ask the questions again.

TIP If your thoughts start to intrude with explanations why you can’t let go, simply take your attention back to your heart area, and focus on your feelings.

4.  Repeat as needed

Letting go of emotions is like unpeeling the layers of an onion. Sometimes the feeling goes quickly; other times you need to repeat steps 3. and 4. a number of times.

The good news is that once the feeling is gone, it’s gone forever! Any more fear surfacing around public speaking is anther aspect of the fear, which I can release in the same way.

The Delicious Nugget: With Sedona Releasing, letting go of emotions around an issue is surprisingly quick and easy.  Simply: move into your heart area, identify the emotion present, welcome the feeling, then ask: Could I let it go?, Would I let it go?, When?

  1. Fear is just a concept put into your mind !! You shall always keep the faith !! Never lose confidence or let anything discourage you!!! Fear is only fear within itself ! Fear is a myth and is not real! Don’t be afraid to use the art, knowledge, dapper, dynasty, have the legacy, because fear doesn’t exist!!! Life and mind is a terrible thing to waste!!!!!!

  2. Hi Maria, the beauty of Sedona releasing, is that you don’t need to think up any questions! Instead, you simply deal with the feeling that’s present in the moment, and, always ask the same questions:

After welcoming the feeling, ask Could I let it go? Would I let it go? When?

Here’s an effective approach for food cravings – I know it works because I’ve used it myself!

When you feel the craving, tell yourself you’ll pause to release the feeling (welcoming it and using the questions above), and if after releasing you still want the food after releasing, it’s OK to eat it.

Giving yourself the possibility of still eating the food takes the pressure off you, and you may be surprised how often after releasing the craving, you no longer want to eat the food!

At first the craving may be so strong that you don’t remember, or aren’t able, to pause and release before eating. That’s fine – simply release whatever feelings are present when you do feel able, even if that’s some time after eating.

Be gentle with yourself, as you allow yourself to transform!

If you persist with this approach, you’ll find yourself able to release before you eat, and eventually the cravings will cease!

  3. hi, what sort of questions shall i use when suffering with food addiction and when i get a strong irresistable craving to eat everything i see.

    cheers maria

  4. Hello my friend and thank you for the wonderful article! I was having extreme trouble with this, after taking the entire release course because I was trying to release from my head! Once you suggested that you release from the heart, i really think I am starting to experience what everyone is ranting and raving about! Question for you if you can answer it, I have a tendency when releasing to have a thought come up and automatically stuff the thought, by the feeling is still there. Can I still release the feeling and get rid of the thoughts or is it too late? Thank you. Chris

    • I’m glad you find the shift to releasing from your heart helpful, Chris.

      You asked:

I have a tendency when releasing to have a thought come up and automatically stuff the thought, by the feeling is still there. Can I still release the feeling and get rid of the thoughts or is it too late?

I’m not entirely sure of your question, however my suggestion is to release whatever comes up – thought, feeling or physical sensation. And if something more comes up after you’ve released – another thought or feeling – welcome it, and release it too. And so on …

There’s no need to analyse what comes up, just welcome and then release feelings/thoughts/sensations as they arise.

      Hope that helps.

  5. Hi May,just read your article and i found it just what i wanted to here for me to get a good picture of the steps of Sedona Method. The problem with me is that i close my eyes, take some good breaths try to relax, and then i bring an image of the issue i want to let go.You mention that you have to use your body through all this not your mind,so i try to find how it feels and i feel nothing. I know you mention that “. Or you may not sense anything – that’s fine” but i been trying and nothing comes up.I am thinking sometimes i am doing something wrong ,but everyone says its a simple technique and yet i can’t get it work for me.So If I can’t get this “feeling” step i can’t continue on to see how the other steps feel like:S
Hope you know what i mean.
    Thanks anyway

    • Karakos, glad the article gives you a good intro to the Sedona Method!

As you’re not noticing a ‘feeling’, I suggest you broaden the approach:

      – Consider what’s bothering you
      – Notice what that brings up – could be a sensation in your body, an image, a feeling – anything really
      – Then continue with steps 3 onwards, replacing ‘feeling’ with whatever you’re noticing.

Do let me know how that goes….

  6. Tony, there’s one way to find out – give it a go!

You could start along these lines:
    – take your attention to someone telling you to smile/relax when you’re happy
    – then follow steps 3 & 4 in my article.

You may surprise yourself about what the Sedona Method can help!

Do let me know how it goes.

  7. Hi May,
I would like to know if this method could help me!
I have trouble accessing my funny bone and am constantly told
to relax or smile even when happy!

    Thanks

  8. That’s good Mo’ayad. Releasing feelings is a wonderful tool, because as you get into the habit of using it regularly, feelings no longer get bottled up!

  9. thanks a lot. It is very helpful.

  10. Hi ifthkare,

Congratulations at having a go with The Sedona Method!

It sounds as if perhaps you’re not letting the feeling go fully before going on to the next feeling.

Suppose, for example, when you think f the thing that’s bothering you, the feeling you have in the moment is anxiety. First you allow the feeling to be present as fully as you can, then you ask the releasing questions. If there’s still anxiety there you welcome it again, and ask the releasing questions again. Keep repeating this welcoming and releasing until the anxiety is gone, or at least diminished.

Only then do you bring the issue to mind again, and see what other feeling is present for you. It could be anxiety again, which probably means there’s more anxiety coming up to release.

So my suggestion is to slow it down, and move a step at a time. It’s kind of like you’re sweeping away the leaves – need to do so gently or you may stir them all up.

[I notice you said: “I stay with the feeling untill realeased as best as I can”.

If the feeling goes before you’ve finished the questions, that’s fine – no need to hold onto it. If you truly welcome the feeling it may go before even asking the releasing questions, though that usually takes a bit of practice, because we don’t really believe it can be that easy!]

    Does this help?

  11. Hi

I am having some difficulty with using the sedona method, at the moment I am allowing the feeling to come through I stay with the feeling untill realeased as best as I can, then I get a another thought pop into my head i realase on that and it just seem to snowball out of control one horrible thought and feelimg building up after one another, i end up with all these horrible emotions running through my mind and body and difficult letting anything go pleeeeeeease can you help shed some light

  12. Chris, thanks, I get you now!

To help prepare for your maths exam, I suggest:
    1. Find a quiet, undisturbed place
    2. Take a few deep breaths to help your mind slow down.
    3. Bring to mind ‘preparing for your exam’, and notice what feeling arises.
    4. Follow the Quick Start for the Sedona Method to first welcome, and then release that feeling.
    5. Notice the next feeling that arises, and repeat.
    6. Aim to stay with your feelings as best you can.
    6. Keep doing this until you feel lighter – then you will find you feel calmer about your exam, and you’ll be able to tune into your inner guidance to find the best way to prepare.

  13. OK, yes . My question is that I want to hear the inner voice when I face some trouble ,for example ,next week is the maths exam but I don’t know how to prepare ,usually I will follow my teacher’s steps and do according to what he said, but sometimes I want to know what is the best part or action for me to take ,so I want some inspiration about the exam ,then I will follow my inner voice instead of my teachers’ I know what I do want ? but i don’t know what is the best action

  14. Chris, would you say a bit more on what you mean by ‘can I get the inspiration’?, so I can answer your question?

  15. can I get the inspiration by using the sedona method? If not ,how should I do ? thank you very much

  16. Chris, I’m glad you found the article helpful.
