Finger hold for worryWhen you find yourself worrying or anxious your mind goes over and over things, building up tension in your body, draining your energy, and perhaps denying you a good night’s sleep.

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.

To wipe worry out of your system simply clasp the fingers of one hand round the thumb of the other hand. It doesn’t matter which thumb you hold, and you can swap hands at any time. Hold your thumb until the worry eases, which could be a minute or twenty minutes.

If you’re a chronic worrier, get into the habit of holding your thumb whenever you can; between courses at the dinner table, at your desk while you’re thinking, on the train, while watcing a film, in the queue etc. You can even go to sleep holding your thumb!

A client’s mind was racing, and I suggested he hold his thumb while we talked. A few minutes later he noticed his shoulders had dropped!

Try holding your thumb to wipe out your worries …

And if you’d like to go deeper and heal the cause of your worrying I recommend three TAT sessions.

  1. Hi May ,

Your webpages and site are so accessible and wonderful . Thank you .

I have been trying to self heal for the longest time and have come across the following and as a student , who tries to be open minded to seek the truth without own illusions , i experiment or tried but as own receptivity is Not clear , I rely on posts like these for what it might be , however , I ‘ve got different information from different sites on the qi go g itselg specifically eg here you mention the index finger hold for fear , some videos and website mention it as The little finger corresponds to water, the kidneys and fear? They say The index finger represents the element metal, the lungs, the large intestine and the emotions depression, sadness and grief. Any thoughts ?

    • Dipika, I’m glad you find my webpages accessible!

Yes, if you Google around, you’ll find varying ways to deal with fear depending on the source which may be 5 elements, acupressure etc. In this post I give the Jin Shin Jyutsu method, as I’ve found their finger holds are effective for me and my clients.

For Melting Fear, I suggest you give the index finger a try, and if it doesn’t work for you, try one of the other approaches you’ve found. There are many doorways into the healing space!
